Biomedical Sensors

The MultiMEMS MPW process allows the manufacturing of designs for various biomedical sensors, such as detectors and counters of biological cells.

Counters of Biological Cells

Most cell counters are based on Coulter principle which consists in measuring the electrical resistance across an aperture, either a small hole or a narrow channel, through which a fluid containing biological cells is flowing.

The cell counters pictured below have been developed by Politecnico di Torino for haematological applications. The examples show a planar design with 3 channels and a vertical design with 4 channels.

While the planar design contains all the required features of a cell counting structure, i.e. inlet and outlet channels and reservoirs, Coulter apertures and a full set of metal electrodes, the vertical design requires external electrodes.
